Pro-social Experience Fiji
“The term ‘prosocial’ is associated with a wide range of positive social behaviours, including trust, cooperation, care, empathy, and altruism— all of which are mainstays of forming and maintaining adaptive human social relationships.” – Marsh, N., Marsh, A., Lee, M. R., & Hurlemann, R. (2021). Oxytocin and the neurobiology of prosocial behaviour. The Neuroscientist, 27 (5-6), 604–620.
My Purpose
Creating community, compassion and contribution in paradise.
Since 2014, Ruth’s passion for prosocial charity work has been deeply rooted in the vibrant communities and breathtaking landscapes of Fiji. Surrounded by the turquoise waters of the South Pacific, Fiji has become the heart of her philanthropic mission—where a vision for community well-being and empowerment continues to flourish. Her journey began with a simple yet powerful idea: using the universal language of sport to uplift and connect communities. Ruth launched a charitable initiative aimed at supplying villages across Fiji with essential sports equipment—tools that would not only support physical health but foster connection, pride, and joy.
With an understanding of how sport transcends language and cultural divides, Ruth’s work has enabled children and adults alike to engage in play, teamwork, and friendly competition. These experiences have become powerful vehicles for self-esteem, social development, and community cohesion. Over the years, her efforts have grown significantly, with sports becoming a core source of pride and motivation in participating villages.
A particularly meaningful milestone has been the selection of two young people from Nawaqarua village to play sports in New Zealand—a momentous achievement for their families and their broader community. The provision of equipment like rugby balls, netballs, and volleyball nets has transformed everyday life in these areas, giving young people tangible opportunities to dream, grow, and thrive. Beyond the physical and social benefits, Ruths prosocial work promotes values such as perseverance, discipline, and mutual respect—life skills that continue to shape stronger, more connected communities.
Looking ahead, Ruth aims to extend her impact by empowering local Fijian social workers through training in the Psych Circuits program. With demonstrated effectiveness in improving mental health outcomes across Australian communities, Ruth believes this model can bring meaningful transformation and resilience to individuals and families in Fiji as well.
